Lotka Celebrates Thirtieth Birthday

Lotka (1983 – Danzig ~ Kennelot) celebrated her thirtieth birthday on March 27, 2013 at Our Mims Retirement Haven, where she has been a resident since August of 2008. She indulged in a carrot cake made just for her before joining the other Ladies and Elmhurst out in the field.

Jeanne Mirabito, Haven President and Farm Owner, remarked: “We began the day with a hearty breakfast of grain. All attempts of grooming and pampering were immediately thwarted with kicks and attempted bites. Lotka left the barn at a gallop, followed quickly by a good roll in the mud. All day the Ladies and Elmhurst ran about the pasture, kicking, rearing, and acting wild.”

Lotka earned $721,804 on the track in 20 races with 10 wins, 4 places, and 1 show. She raced under the Kennelot Stables for Count Henryk deKwiatkoski. Her firsts include wins in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes, the Grade 2 Black Helen Handicap, and the Grade 3 Columbiana Handicap. Her win in the second Queen Elizabeth Challenge Cup Stakes at Keeneland was celebrated with a personal appearance by the mare at the Breakfast With The Works for the racetrack on the morning of the twenty-fifth anniversary of her victory.

OMRH became a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2006. Featured in Barbara Livingston’s More Old Friends, the Haven specializes in “restoring health and spirit in aged mares.” The Haven is supported through donations, eBay auctions, and its online shop.

The Haven is home to Princess Royale, Bel’s Starlet, Cruella, Blue Viking, Lotka, Ms. Royal Flagship, Taba Dance, Trail Guide, and Dogwood Patty. Our Mims’ grandson, 1997 Breeder’s Cup™ Sprint winner Elmhurst, arrived in October of 2011.
