16 Aug Dixie’s Hope Wins for Our Mims Retirement Haven
Dixie’s Hope (Cozzene x Kovincha) won the first race at Presque Isles on August 13th. Racing for Pocket Aces Racing, LLC, 1% of the 17.2 hand 3-year-old’s stable take was designated as a donation to Our Mims Retirement Haven.
Our Mims Retirement Haven in Paris, Kentucky, is a recognized 501(c)3 equine charity founded by Jeanne Mirabito. Our Mims was Calumet Farm’s first Eclipse champion (1977 Eclipse Award 3-Year-Old Filly) who spent her last years at Mirabito’s farm. The Haven was formed as a tribute to the grand old mare who died in 2003 at the age of 29. OMRH takes in retired Thoroughbred broodmares and provides quality care and love for them for the rest of their lives.
According to the Pocket Aces Racing web site: “Dixie’s Hope broke her maiden with a 9-length win at Presque Isle Downs on Friday evening. In her most complete effort to date, Dixie’s Hope broke alertly from the 7th position and settled in 3.5 lengths behind the leaders in 4th place after the first quarter. She moved into 3rd place but failed to gain any ground on pace setter Silver Clan at the 1/2-mile mark. She began her move heading into the far turn and led by 8 lengths going into the top of the stretch. Ocean Thunder was up for 2nd and Ditch the Ace finished third. Going off as the 1/5 favorite, Dixie’s Hope paid $2.60, $2.10, $2.10. Ocean Thunder paid $4.60 and $2.80. Ditch the Act paid $3.40. Pocket Aces Racing will donate $210 to Our Mims Broodmare Retirement Haven barn renovation as part of its continued effort to give back to racing.”
“Our Mims was the Rachel Alexandra of her era, the ’70’s, that witnessed Secretariat, Spectacular Bid and Seattle Slew. Her legacy and Jeanne Mirabito’s efforts with the broodmare retirement serve as a reminder to all of us to protect the racing industry by protecting the horses for their life-time,” said Jared Shoemaker, PAR managing partner.
“This is very exciting,” added Mirabito. “While there are a few races NAMED after our residents, we’ve never had a race dedicated to the ladies before. We are proud to be a part of Dixie’s fan club. We are touched by this incredible gesture made by PAR and Dixie’s Hope. What a unique, innovative and wonderfully thrilling way to help our ladies! Horse racing just doesn’t get any better than this!”
