Sugar and Spice was the Haven's very first official Lady. That seems very appropriate because Sugar was Mims' half-sister. Born on April 2, 1977, Sugar was Sweeth Tooth's fifth foal, and her sire was the very handsome Key to the Mint.
Sugar had quite the impressive race record. She won her first three career starts, including the G2 Ashland Stakes. She also won the G1 Mother Goose Stakes and the G2 Cotillion Stakes. Sugar placed in the G1 Ladies Handicap, the G2 Gazelle Handicap, and the G2 Firenze Handicap. She was third in the G1 Alabama Stakes, the G1 Acorn Stakes, and the G1 Delaware Oaks. All in all, Sugar earned $257,046 in 18 starts, 5 wins, 3 places, and 3 shows.
Sugar's most successful race foal, a filly named Cinnamon Sugar by Wild Again (Elmhurst's daddy), earned $412,596 on the track. Sugar had eleven foals in all. Sweetness Song, her last foal - a colt by Unbridled's Song - was sold in the Keeneland 2000 September sale for $80,000. Sugar was sold at auction twice: Keeneland, November 1991 (Calumet's dispersal sale) when she was sold to David Minton Bloodstock for $425,000; and Keeneland, November 1994 when she was sold to John R. Gaines for $250,000.
Sugar was brought to Jeanne's attention by Barbara D. Livingston. Barbara had seen Sugar on the farm and was concerned about the mare's health. Barbara approached the farm, asking if they would donate Sugar to this brand-new retirement place for Thoroughbred broodmares. Cheryl and Jeanne had just finished raising money for Our Mims' stone at Calumet and were getting the funding together for OMRH. They were prepared to begin another fundraising round to acquire Sugar, but soon found that wasn't necessary. Sugar was purchased for $1 and came to live at the Haven in early May of 2004.
