31 Jul Our Mims Retirement Haven welcomes two new Ladies
Our Mims Retirement Haven (OMRH) is proud to announce the arrival of our two newest ‘Ladies’, Rhapsody Queen and Somethinaboutbetty. These two beautiful stakes-producing mares arrived from Siena Farm, Paris, KY, on July 12, 2023 and the Haven is excited to have them join our herd.
Rhapsody Queen (KY) is by Unbridled’s Song, out of the Deputy Minister mare To The Queen. She is a gorgeous gray, foaled April 10, 2005. Purchased by Siena Farm as a yearling, she went on to race wearing the red and yellow silks of the farm. In six starts, she won $37,350. Upon retiring from the track, Rhapsody Queen arrived back at Siena Farm to begin her broodmare career, having seven foals from sires such as Harlan’s Holiday, Shanghai Bobby and Verrazano.
Somethinaboutbetty (MD) is by Forestry, out of the Cox’s Ridge mare Here Comes Betty. She is a beautiful bay, foaled April 18, 2003. ‘Betty’ won several Black Type Stakes races and is a Graded Stakes placed mare. She raced in the black and red silks of Rick Pitino’s Runnin’ Cardinal Stable; running 23 times with a record of 5-9-3, she won $342,792. Betty is one of Siena’s foundation mares and became a stakes-producer for them. Betty had eight foals. Those foals were by Bernardini (twice), Tapit, Animal Kingdom, California Chrome, Distorted Humor, Super Saver and Unbridled’s Song. Betty is infamously known as the dam of ‘Dewey Square’.
Both mares helped Siena Farm during their early days of inception, and have called the farm ‘home’ all these years. Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Patino, one of Siena Farm’s Owners and the farm General Manager said, “These two mares have been here as long as I have and we will miss them, but we know they are being kept together and will receive amazing care, love and attention, which is what we want.” Our Mims Retirement Haven couldn’t be prouder that the owners of Siena Farm entrust us with the care of such important mares out of their operation.
Once acclimated to their new environment, Rhapsody Queen and Somethinaboutbetty will join the other Ladies of the herd, and will be treasured and nurtured in accordance with the vision of OMRH founder, Jeanne Mirabito (1960-2020).
OMRH became a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2006: founded by Jeanne Mirabito. Featured in Barbara Livingston’s More Old Friends, the Haven specializes in “restoring health and spirit in aged mares.” The Haven is supported through donations, and its online shop.
Our Mims Retirement Haven is accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), and has received grants from Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA), After the Finish Line (ATFL) and the Annenberg Foundation.
Current horses include Exciting Bucket, Jo Jo’s Gypsy, Play Book, Kidnap Katie, My Trusty Cat, Pleasantry, Alpha Heat, Sweet Ambition, and the OMRH mascot, Tea Biscuit. Our Mims’ grandson, Elmhurst is the only gelding to have been part of the Haven, and he arrived at the Haven in October of 2011, and passed at the age of 31 on January 4, 2021.
