Normally, on this day, December 9, I would be making my way to Calumet Farm Cemetery to leave peppermints at Our Mims grave and to tell her how much I still miss her. But here I am at home with my leg propped up and body pumped full of drugs. I'm sure she'd understand.
Still, I can't let the day go by without remembering my dear friend and the impact she had on my life.
What a horse she was. In case you never had the honor of meeting her, let me tell you, Mims had a presence about her that was different than other horses. She was bigger somehow. Not in size, in some intangible quality, solid yet undescribable. Her nicker could melt your heart and her beautiful eyes could warm your soul.
Our Mims wasn't the friendliest horse so when she gave you attention it really meant something. If she showed you affection you were special indeed.
Everyday I think how lucky I was to have her in my life. Someday, I know I'll see her again and once again my heart will be whole.
