OMRH Receives Grant from TCA

Our Mims Retirement Haven (, a 501(c)3 charity that houses retired Thoroughbred broodmares, was a recipient of a 2011 grant from Thoroughbred Charities of America (

“We’re so excited,” remarked Cheryl Bellucci, OMRH Director of Fund Raising and Promotion. “We asked for enough money for gravel and downspouts to alleviate mud spots and make it safer for our ladies (the mares) and our visitors. TCA so graciously awarded us enough money to create a safe viewing area for our visitors as well!”

Our Mims Retirement Haven is named after Calumet’s 1977 Eclipse Award 3-Year-Old Filly Our Mims. Jeanne Mirabito, with the help of a local rescue, brought Mims to her farm after finding her scrounging for forage in a cattle field. Mims lived out her life at Mirabito’s Paris farm. When Mims died, Mirabito formed the Haven as a tribute to her friend. OMRH was declared a non-profit by the IRS in March of 2007.

Current housing Timeless Sue, Hana Bride, Little Miss Porter, Bel’s Starlet, Princess Royale, Ms. Stalwart, Missy White Oak, Ms. Royal Flagship, Blue Viking, Taba Dance, and Trail Guide, OMRH has been home to such notable horses as Sugar and Spice, Taba, Iza Valentine, My Turbulent Miss, and Alabama Nana.

Said Mirabito of the improvements made possible by the TCA grant: “I stand near our barns and realize that TCA is making a dream come true. I have imagined our barn area free of mud many times. Soon, it will be a reality. God bless TCA for helping our ladies!” Work has already begun on the improvements.

TCA was formed in 1990 to raise and distribute funds for charities in the Thoroughbred industry which provide a better life for Thoroughbreds both during and after their racing careers by supporting retirement, rescue, research and by helping the people who work with them. TCA is the charitable arm of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA). Their latest Annual Stallion Season auction grossed nearly $1.7 million dollars.
